2019 Camp Theme: “Under the Sea”

Each year the Heart of Virginia Council’s Day Camp Committee selects a new theme for all district day camps. This year’s theme is “Under the Sea”. In addition to day camp traditions of archery, BBs, and sports, our program areas will be filled with hands on activities following our theme. This theme will be interpreted as the Program Committee deems fit with the Aims of Cub Scouting. Expect it to be creative!

Often called "the camp that comes to the Scout," Cub Scout Day Camp is an organized five-day program for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts conducted by certified and trained leadership, at an approved site, during daylight hours 8am-4pm. Drop off is between 7:45am and 8:00am.

Scouts need to bring lunch and drinks. They will receive a water bottle and T-Shirt on the first day to use and wear for the remaining days.

Each Pack must provide Chaperones at a ratio of 1:5 staff to Scout. What is offered is a high-quality program brought to you by many dedicated volunteers at a reasonable cost (only $85)! Cub Scout Day Camps are conducted in accordance with established standards as given in the National Standards for Cub Scout Day Camps. Camp is June 24 to 28 at Powhatan Middle School, 4135 Old Buckingham Road in Powhatan, Virginia.

New Tigers or Upcoming 1st graders can also attend everything that the other Scouts do. They do require a 1:1 Chaperone however. This can be their Parent or any 18 year old or older that has been given responsibility by the Parent.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DAY CAMP?

We like to say that Day Camp is "an adventure with a purpose." There are several purposes of the Day Camp program which include:

  • Providing a continuation of the Cub Scout program through the summer
  • Helping the Scouts maintain their interest and needs
  • Giving the Pack an opportunity to meet a requirement of the Summertime Pack Award
  • Assisting in the recruiting and training of present and future Cub Scout leadership
  • Aiding in the progress of transition from Cub Scouts to Scouts BSA
  • Strengthening Den and Pack organizations for a better year-round program
  • Having fun!

WHO CAN ATTEND CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP?

Cub Scout Day Camp is a unique program; it is usually the first major activity for Scouts after graduation from their previous rank. At Day Camp, Scouts begin to work toward their next rank in the Cub Scout program and we use the same ranks to identify age groups as your Pack:

  • Tiger is for youth who have completed kindergarten or are seven years old
  • Wolf is for youth who have completed first grade or are eight years old
  • Bear is for youth who have completed second grade or are nine years old
  • Webelos is for youth who have completed third grade or fourth grade or are ten years old

WHAT ACTIVITIES WILL BE AVAILABLE?

To provide age-appropriate activities for our participants, we split our program into two separate tracks: one for Cub Scouts (Tiger, Wolf, and Bear) and one for Webelos Scouts (Webelos & Arrow of Light). Each track is designed to provide age appropriate activities and can provide the Scouts with opportunities to complete achievements and electives necessary for rank advancement.

The stations are where the activities take place. Each station program is 35–45 minutes long with 5–10 minutes set aside for traveling between stations. Typical stations include Archery, BBs, Field Sports, STEM, Crafts, Scout Skills (Cooking, Nature, 1st Aid, and others), and Outdoor Games.

HOW MUCH DOES DAY CAMP COST?

The Day Camp fee is $85 per Scout for all 5 days of attendance. This includes a camp t-shirt, patch, and water bottle as well as covering all insurance costs and program materials.
